One Agent for Everything, With Its Own Email Address
On October 8, 2026, Google Cloud announced the Gemini agent at Gemini at Work 2026, a single AI assistant that plans its own tasks, routes work across Gemini and Anthropic Claude models, and connects to third-party systems including Salesforce, ServiceNow, Snowflake, and Microsoft Office. The agent can spawn temporary sub-agents, run persistently in the cloud, and act on objectives rather than step-by-step instructions.
In plain terms, Google wants one AI assistant to handle tasks across all the software a company already pays for, rather than making workers switch between separate tools for each job. The agent also receives its own Google Workspace account, with an email address, calendar, and Drive, so it operates inside the organization under its own identity.
The announcement arrives in a race over the enterprise AI work layer. OpenAI launched Dots on September 29, and Microsoft already distributes Copilot across its 365 suite.
On May 21, 2026, the board of a federal bank voted unanimously to lend nearly $3 billion to build a gold mine on American soil. Congress got 25 days notice. Nobody objected.
Final papers are expected in the second half of this year. The day that ink dries, three things happen at once: funding risk goes to zero, the U.S. government becomes financially fused to the project, and Wall Street re-rates the stock from speculative developer to federally backed strategic asset.
One more detail. The company's own filings cite "substantial support and partnership from the Department of War," a phrase we've never seen on a gold project. The reason: alongside its gold, the deposit holds a metal China formally banned from export to the United States. The only domestic reserve in the country.
The company is about one fiftieth the size of Newmont.
The Company Behind It
Workspace Is the Distribution, the Agent Is the Product
Google Cloud is the cloud computing and enterprise AI division of Alphabet, one of the world's largest public companies. Nearly 90% of the Fortune 100 use its Gemini Enterprise product, according to the company.
Google Workspace is the productivity suite behind the Gemini agent, competing directly with Microsoft 365 for enterprise email, documents, and collaboration. The agent's reach depends on how many organizations already run their daily work inside Google's tools.
The Gemini agent routes work across both Google's own models and Anthropic's Claude, a design aimed at organizations that refuse single-vendor dependence. A feature called Borderless Lakehouse lets the agent query data sitting on Amazon S3 and Azure Data Lake with no variable egress fees, lowering adoption barriers for multicloud buyers.
Why This Matters Financially
The Agent Is Free, the Compute Is Not
Google confirmed the Gemini agent is included at no additional charge for existing Gemini Enterprise subscribers. But every task the agent runs, every model call it makes, and every sub-agent it spawns consumes compute and storage that Google meters and bills.
Selling AI tools is straightforward; embedding them inside the identity layer where an organization's data lives is something harder to undo. Once a coworker agent holds its own Workspace email threads, calendar entries, and Drive files, replacing it means rebuilding the agent's identity, history, and integrations on another platform.
Google has begun specializing the agent by industry, with financial services and legal versions in preview and government, healthcare, and retail coming soon. Each specialized version deepens the product's fit inside a vertical and raises the cost of switching away.
Limits and Uncertainty
A Preview Product Competing Against an Installed Base
Microsoft Copilot is already embedded across Word, Excel, Teams, and Outlook, backed by Microsoft Graph's data layer tying together email, documents, and calendars. Building a better AI agent is one race; sitting inside the productivity suite an organization already uses is another, and the second one may matter more.
The Gemini agent launched in private preview, not general availability. Google has not announced a GA date, and enterprise teams building production systems typically wait for that milestone before committing engineering resources.
The Gemini agent matters because it positions Google Workspace as an AI operating layer for the enterprise. The real impact depends on whether organizations already running Microsoft 365 will adopt a second platform, and whether Google can move from preview to production before rivals lock in their own clients.
