Record Contracted Demand, Record Capital Spending, Negative Cash Flow

On September 10, 2026, Oracle reported fiscal first-quarter results showing remaining performance obligations of $664 billion, an increase of $209 billion year over year, after booking more than $30 billion in new AI cloud contracts during the quarter.

The operating numbers were strong. Total revenue rose 30% to $19.3 billion, cloud infrastructure revenue grew 121% to $7.4 billion, and non-GAAP earnings per share of $1.92 beat the $1.74 analysts expected. Oracle raised its fiscal 2027 adjusted earnings forecast to $8.10 per share, and the stock rose about 7%.

Remaining performance obligations, or RPO, are contracted commitments that have not yet been recognized as revenue. Oracle said demand for AI cloud training and inferencing services continues to grow faster than supply.

Delivering against it is expensive. Capital expenditures reached $28.5 billion for the quarter, free cash flow was roughly negative $5.4 billion, and Oracle sold $20 billion of common stock through an at-the-market program during the period.

A Software Company Rebuilt Around Renting GPUs

Oracle spent decades selling database software and enterprise applications, businesses that generated reliable cash. Its cloud infrastructure arm has become the growth engine, and it is a fundamentally different business: capital-intensive, built on physical capacity rather than licenses.

The buildout is running at industrial scale. Oracle delivered 850 megawatts of additional data center capacity during the quarter and has delivered more than 300,000 GPUs to AI cloud customers since the end of the prior quarter, almost triple the previous pace.

The mix shift shows up in margins. Quarterly gross margin fell to about 60%, its lowest in eight quarters, as lower-margin AI infrastructure became a larger share of the business.

Why This Matters Financially

A Backlog Is A Schedule, Not A Bank Balance

RPO is contracted demand, not cash. Roughly half of the $664 billion is expected to convert over 36 months, and the full figure equals about 7.4 years of Oracle's entire company revenue guidance, so the number describes a decade of obligations rather than near-term income.

The timing mismatch is the whole story. Oracle must build capacity years before the contracts pay for it, which is why capital spending exceeded operating cash flow and free cash flow turned negative despite record demand.

Funding that gap with equity is the notable choice. Selling $20 billion of stock rather than adding to a debt load already around $125 billion means existing shareholders absorb some of the buildout cost.

Limits and Uncertainty

The Catch: Concentration And Conversion

Roughly half the backlog is tied to a single customer, OpenAI, according to reporting on the quarter, though the non-OpenAI portion has more than doubled in a year. A backlog that large resting substantially on one counterparty carries a different risk profile than the headline suggests.

Conversion depends on physical construction. Contracts become revenue only as fast as Oracle can energize data centers and install GPUs, which means grid connections, equipment supply, and component costs all sit between the promise and the payment. Management has said it uses fixed-price contracts where costs are known and pass-through mechanisms where they are not, but margins are already compressing, and the stock trades well below year-ago levels despite the record numbers.

The results matter because Oracle's backlog is one of the clearest available measures of contracted AI demand across the industry. The real impact depends on whether capacity arrives fast enough to convert those obligations into cash, and whether the company can stop funding the gap by selling stock.
